What a wonderful image this devotion creates. Held safely by an anchor. Never straying far from God. But I think there is also more to the image. A less happy side if you will. As I'm picturing a small boat being held by an anchor, I realized something. This boat can still toss to and fro. It's not on dry land. It's not held on something solid. It's resting in the tumultuous ocean water. Water that never ceases moving. So although the boat won't be drifting off to sea, it can easily be bounced around in that one spot.
And here's the connection to life. Being anchored in God doesn't mean we are going to be peacefully safe all the time. There are still going to be problems in life that make us feel we are being tossed to and fro. There are going to be days when the waves crash so high that some water spills in the boat. But we will never drift away. Despite these storms in our life, we are still held securely in the master's hand.
And the closer we live to God the more secure our anchor will be. "Live deeply in Christ." That's what 1 John 2:28 tells us. Snuggle up close. Rest in his presence. Consult Him during the day. Make Him your number one love. Then when the boat does toss we will be close enough to feel his presence surround us.
